Regional Forum on Managing Marine Plastic Pollution: Policy Initiatives in ASEAN Countries
The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Jakarta, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) held the Regional Forum on Managing Marine Plastic Pollution: Policy Initiatives in ASEAN Countries, on 5 December 2017 in Jakarta.
The forum featured a high-level exchange of ideas and information among 100 participants from research centers from Southeast Asian Countries, several ministries from the Government of Indonesia, ASEAN Secretariat, international organizations, foreign missions in Jakarta, media, NGOs and academia.
Chargé d’Affaires Mr. Hendrik Barkeling gave opening remarks and Deputy Coordinating Minister for Maritime Sovereignty Affairs at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs Republic of Indonesia, Dr. Arif Havas Oegroseno, delivered an inspiring keynote speech.
The forum addressed data needs and gaps on trends and impacts of marine litter, contributing to the establishment of cooperation with other relevant initiatives and projects implemented in the Southeast Asia Sea. Based on lessons learned from ASEAN Countries and Germany, recommendations were given on effective policymaking at regional, national and local levels.
The next day, a group of students together with an environmental NGO and the local government of Tangerang Regency started a beach clean-up campaign in Tanjung Pasir.
