Germany and Timor-Leste

Relations between Timor-Leste and Germany are very cordial. Since the U.N. Transitional Administration (1999-2002) Timor-Leste has received extensive assistance from Germany for the economic and political reconstruction of the country. After obtaining national independence on 20 May 2002 Timor-Leste was recognized by Germany under international law and diplomatic relations were established.

Ambassador Michael Freiherr von Ungern-Sternberg presented his letter of credential to the President of Timor-Leste, H.E. Taur Matan Ruak, on 16 February. Mr von Ungern-Sternberg, who is resident in Jakarta, has thus been accredited as German Ambassador to the South East Asian island nation.

Germany’s commitment to development cooperation in Timor-Leste mainly concentrates on peace building. This is in line with Timor-Leste’s own Strategic Development Plan 2011-2030.
